Aubin

A lovely name meaning ‘white’ or ‘fair,’ that would suit a Great Pyrenees well.

Beau

For a ‘handsome’ dog, such as a male Braque du Bourbonnais.

Beldoin

A Berger Picard would make a great ‘brave friend.’

Heureux

This means ‘happy,’ and would reflect the bright character of a Pyrenean Shepherd.

Leon

He may be small, but a Little Lion Dog could be ‘brave as a lion.’

Leroux

This is a name for a ‘red head’ dog, like the grand Dogue de Bordeaux.

Louis

The name of many French kings would suit the airs and graces of a Poodle.

Marvel

This means ‘wonder’ and ‘admire,’ and suits the expansive spirit of the Papillon.

Mignon

An adorable French Bulldog would be perfect for this name, which means ‘cute’ or ‘dainty.’

Pascal

There is something of the fresh country ‘Easter child’ or ‘lamb’ about the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen that gives us hope.

French female dog names and meanings

You may have heard of 'Marie Antoinette' or 'Fantine' from 'Les Misérables', but have you heard of these original French girl dog names?

Adele

This name means ‘noble’, and would suit a Standard Poodle.

Belle

Like in Beauty and the Beast, this means ‘beautiful.’ A Bichon Frise could carry this name off.

Bibi

This means ‘lady of the house,’ which could fit a Briard, we think.

Bijoux

The French word for 'jewel'. A great name for a little Poodle or Bichon Frisé!

Bonbon

A sweet name meaning ‘candy’ for a floofball Barbet

Brie

For the soft and delicious cheese! Perfect for an affectionate and gentle Beauceron.

Coco (Chanel)

The world famous designer hailed from, you guessed it, France! It would suit a Brittany perfectly!

Fleur

The French word for 'flower'. A beautiful name for a beautiful dog, such as the French Spaniel.

Noëlle

The female version of the word for 'Christmas'. A beautiful white dog such as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog would wear this name well.

Papillon

The Papillon dog is an obvious choice for this name, which means ‘butterfly,’ but we think it would also be a nice name for a pretty Petit Bleu de Gascogne.
