Meghan Markle speaks out about rescue dogs
Though on maternity leave, the Duchess is not forgetting about her duties. This is particularly true of her role as patron of the Mayhew animal shelters.

The animal welfare group recently shared their annual review, for which the foreword was written by the Duchess herself.
Though Meghan is very attached to all causes animal-related, she was particularly struck by Mayhew’s mission: “What initially struck me about Mayhew specifically is their community based approach not simply on rehoming animals, but in the preventative care that inhibits these cats and dogs from ending up in shelters in the first place.”
Meghan visited Mayhew in January, and met a number of dogs that were in the shelter’s care. She even almost fell for a Jack Russell pup, but had to restrain herself from rescuing her due to her pregnancy.
Plus, Meghan already has her hands full with a couple of dogs. Guy, her rescue Beagle, moved to the UK with her when she became engaged to Prince Harry.
“As a proud rescue dog owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring,” she wrote in Mayhew’s foreword.
Speaking about her beloved Guy, she said: “He was petrified to come in the front door. He didn’t know how to go up and down stairs. All the things you’re patient with and then you end up with the best dog in the world.”
The Royal couple also took in a female Labrador recently, though her name is not yet known.
With two dogs and a baby, the animal-loving couple certainly have their hands full!
