Whilst some dogs seem unfazed by bad weather, others aren't keen on the idea of setting a paw outside. But why such an attitude?
A less stimulating walk because of the rain
It's important to understand that rain completely changes a dog's sensory environment. Their sense of smell can be disrupted by the humidity, as scents will be entirely different. This can disorient them and make the walk far less stimulating.
The sound of rain can also be a source of discomfort or fear, especially if your dog is already sensitive to loud noises like thunder or fireworks.
Some dogs simply don't like having wet paws or a soaked coat. Breeds with short hair and no protective undercoat feel the cold and dampness more acutely.
How to help your dog
To help your dog, don't force them, but encourage them gradually. Use rewards, a lightweight raincoat if they're sensitive to it, and shorten walks during heavy downpours.
With patience and kindness, they'll eventually accept the rain without too much fuss — and may even find a certain pleasure in it, like any good adventure companion.
