It was a sight the volunteers would never forget. When they received a report about a dog in distress, they never expected to find such a heartbreaking scene. There, lying on the ground in an alley in Philadelphia, USA, was a Dalmatian. The dog was motionless, with ropes tied tightly around her neck.
At first, the rescuers thought the dog was dead. She was nothing but skin and bone.
But as one of the rescuers approached and placed a trembling hand on her side, they felt a faint breath.
A glimmer of hope
Realising that every second counted and that the dog was far too exhausted to take a single step, one of the rescuers gently lifted her into his arms.
As soon as she arrived at the veterinary clinic, her treatment began. After cutting the ropes that bound her, the vets treated her wounds and put her on a drip. But perhaps the most effective remedy was the constant presence of the people who had decided not to give up on her.
A new beginning
Today, the Dalmatian is doing much better. Although the scars around her neck are a reminder of her past, she can now sleep in a cosy bed, eat her fill and, most importantly, never have to fear humans again.
