The legendary actor from Taxi Driver and The Godfather is famous for his dark and intimidating roles. Yet, away from the Hollywood spotlight and film sets, the 83-year-old actor hides a much softer side. At his home in New York, in the United States, he does not rule as a feared godfather, but as the leader of a cheerful four-legged troupe.
His friend Woody Harrelson revealed this surprising habit during a joint interview published in Interview Magazine. While visiting Robert De Niro's home, he was surprised to be greeted by a genuine army of little animals running wild.
Eighteen small dogs rule the roost
"We went to his house, and nine dogs came to the door. Small dogs that seem to do whatever they want," Woody Harrelson joked as he recalled his visit. In total, the star reportedly houses no fewer than 18 canine companions at home. This impressive number contrasts sharply with the tough-guy image he has portrayed on screen for several decades.
As reported by Madame Figaro, this canine family is not completely new for the actor. Back in 2022, during an appearance on an American podcast, the star admitted to having "more than ten dogs" under his roof, even confessing with a smile that he probably did not know all their names by heart.
From red carpets to film sets
This overflowing passion is not limited to his private life. The famous actor regularly takes his small companions along on official trips. Robert De Niro and his partner Tiffany Chen have been photographed several times walking red carpets with genuine terriers lovingly nestled in their arms.
What is more, some members of this incredible pack have had the privilege of tasting movie stardom alongside their master. Two of his little pets, named Lily and Annie, even made a noticeable appearance on the big screen. It is a lovely proof that in the De Niro household, love for dogs is a true family affair!
