Ground gives way beneath German Shorthaired Pointer in garden as 15 firefighters rush to help

A dramatic accident suddenly occurred on private property in Germany. Shortly afterwards, 15 emergency rescuers arrived at the scene equipped with heavy machinery.

German Shorthaired Pointer saved in the nick of time from well in Thuringia

It was Tuesday lunchtime in Auleben, Thuringia (Germany), and quiet reigned over a local family's garden. Everything seemed perfectly peaceful, until disaster suddenly struck!

The family dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer, was happily playing in his usual spot. Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath his paws. With a misstep and a brief moment of panic, the dog vanished underground. He fell 5 feet down a narrow soakaway pit and was trapped.

A major rescue operation launched at midday

The dog was stuck fast in the pitch-black, narrow shaft. When his owners realised they could not free him themselves, they called the fire brigade at 11:30 am.

The seriousness of the situation was quickly confirmed. A total of 15 emergency responders from Hamma, Auleben and Heringen units rushed to the scene. The pit was deep and the dog was terrified. Firefighters immediately grabbed shovels to clear the soil around the entrance by hand. Every movement had to be precise to avoid putting the poor dog in further danger.

A tense rescue mission

With the exact depth of the narrowest part still uncertain and real concerns about having to destroy the structure, the rescue team called for reinforcements. Municipal technical services arrived to support them with a mini-digger and a jackhammer.

The rescue threatened to turn into a complex technical operation. Time was of the essence as the frightened dog waited at the bottom in total darkness.

A huge relief for everyone

Eventually, firefighters managed to clear enough of the upper part of the shaft. Secured by ropes, one rescuer squeezed down into the narrow hole. Rather than using heavy equipment at the bottom of the pit, he opted for a gentler approach.

Armed with treats, he managed to calm the trembling dog and lure him closer. He carefully grabbed hold of him, secured him, and the team pulled the four-legged friend back up by hand. After an agonising 75 minutes, the story had a happy ending: the dog was safe and sound.
