A cardboard box by the canal
In August, a worker from the Central California Irrigation District (CCID) was walking along a canal near Los Banos Creek in California when he noticed a cardboard box sitting on the dirt. Around it was a group of little puppies, all abandoned. He immediately alerted the rescue organisation Kate's Furreka Rescue (KFR), whose team quickly arrived at the scene.
Rescuers discovered 11 puppies, many of whom were still stuck inside the box. "The puppies were hot, hungry and thirsty," a KFR team member told The Dodo.
Eleven puppies, eleven names
The puppies were brought to safety and taken to the rescue centre, where they received medical care and regular meals before moving into foster homes. It was their foster families who named them River, Brooks, Dewdrop, Misty, Bay, Kai, Hudson, Wells, Banks, Nile and Hydro—all water-inspired names. Today, they are all doing wonderfully. According to the rescue group, they are playing, socialising and learning that they are loved. They even added that the pups are so affectionate, volunteers can hold them like little babies.
Soon, the puppies will be neutered, an essential step before they move on to the adoption process. Seeing them recover so well never fails to put a smile on the rescuers' faces.
