It's been a tough year for Martin the Jack Russell. Around 12 months ago, he lost his dog sister and best friend in the whole world. She was a loving Labrador called Alma. Sweet Alma passed away following a short illness.
The pair did everything together - and we mean everything. They were practically inseparable. Martin was devastated, and the thought of being without Alma sent him into a deep depression.

Dogs understand love - and loss
Emilia Ivan, Martin's mom, was shocked at how much it affected Martin. She believes his reaction is more proof (if we ever needed any) that dogs really do know what love is.
"He went through a depression because Alma wasn't here anymore," said Emilia. "Martin was so lonely and sad. He loved Alma so much and missed her terribly. It wasn't your average bond. They had something really special."
Emilia couldn't bear to see Martin in such a bad way. So after giving him some more time to process the loss, she decided it was time for Martin to make a new friend.
That little ball of love arrived in the shape of a rescue kitten. Emilia read her story online and thought she'd be a perfect match for Martin.
Emilia was nervous about the first meeting. How would Martin take to the new arrival? Was he ready?
Love is the cure for everything
Of course he was! It turned out to be exactly what Martin needed.
"It was love at first sight," said an overjoyed Emilia. "He instantly wanted to care for and love her, covering her with dog kisses."
Emilia noticed such a positive change in Martin that she decided to add another rescue kitten to the pack. And Martin was just as happy to meet her.
Martin has taken to the big brother role like a natural. He now spends most of his day watching over their pair and keeping them safe. And that old, heartbroken Martin has been replaced by a happy dog living and enjoying life as he should. Love always wins in the end!
