On 22nd November in Southern California, staff at a school spotted a little dog wandering on the school grounds.

They could clearly see that the little dog was starving.

Very worried about her, they tried to get closer, but she kept running away. So, they left some food out for her instead.

A dog in need

The poor thing kept darting back and forth, grabbing food before running off again. The staff suspected she had recently given birth. One of the school employees, Lori, is a friend of Suzette Hall, who runs the Logan's Legacy 29 rescue. Lori made sure to feed the dog whenever she appeared and contacted Suzette for help.

When the rescuer arrived, the dog was nowhere to be found. But Suzette followed her intuition. She spotted another dog going in and out of a nearby apartment building and decided to follow it. And there, she got the surprise of her life. The mother dog was inside, huddled by an apartment door. The family living there told the rescuer that the dog wasn't theirs, but that she had just given birth in the building's crawl space!

A change of plan

What started as a rescue for one dog quickly turned into a mission to save an entire family. Suzette and Lori soon found the six tiny puppies in the crawl space, but they were just out of reach. Thankfully, a school employee came to their aid with a mop. He used the handle to gently coax each puppy towards them.

All the puppies were safely retrieved. Then, after several hours of patience, Suzette managed to coax the mother dog into a trap. Mama and her little ones were overjoyed to be reunited and refused to leave each other's side when they left the vet clinic for their foster home. The whole family is now doing well and enjoying the warmth and safety of their temporary home!
