It seemed like a perfectly ordinary day in early May at the German-Czech border, near Selb in Germany. Officers were monitoring the traffic when they spotted a regular-looking van and signalled for it to pull over.
Behind the wheel was a 40-year-old man, accompanied by two other passengers. The officers asked the usual questions, and the vehicle's occupants were discreet in their responses. At first, there was nothing to suggest a shocking secret was hidden inside the van.
A dark secret under the back seat
But in situations like these, the uniformed officers trust their instincts. They began to inspect the inside of the van more closely. Their eyes scanned the seats and eventually moved to the floor, before being drawn to the back seat.
In that moment, the routine calm gave way to an oppressive tension. What was hidden there, huddled in the shadows under the seat, instantly left the officers horrified.
Three puppies in distress
There, crammed into a tiny space, were three minuscule puppies. The scene that greeted the rescuers was one of shocking cruelty. For these defenceless animals, there wasn't a single drop of water for the journey, nor any sign of food.
They were being transported like inanimate cargo! When questioned, the driver couldn't produce any documents to prove that the little creatures belonged to him. It was clear that the animals' lives had been recklessly endangered.

The end of a cruel journey
But it was right here, at this checkpoint in Selb, that the three puppies' terrible ordeal came to an end. They were immediately freed from their dark hiding place and placed in the care of a nearby animal shelter, where their lives could finally begin.
The van and its three occupants were then allowed to continue on their way. For the 40-year-old driver, however, the discovery was not without consequences: he will now face legal action for his reckless behaviour.
