When a dog called Pita first arrived at an overcrowded shelter in Los Angeles, USA, her rescuers were very worried about her.

The little dog was pregnant and looked like she could give birth at any moment.

They decide to place her

Unfortunately, the rescuers had neither the time, space nor resources to care for her and her puppies-to-be. So they contacted the organisation MaeDay Rescue, which immediately agreed to take her in.

When Natalie Garcia, the founder of MaeDay Rescue, saw Pita for the first time, she couldn't believe how big her belly was.

The little dog could barely walk!

Natalie took Pita to the vet for an ultrasound. She was going to give birth any day, so her rescuers placed her with a foster family and waited.

The big day arrives

A few days later, the big moment arrived.

Pita's foster mum spent the whole night helping the dog give birth. By morning, she had five healthy puppies: Ciabatta, Loaf, Baguette, Focaccia and Rye.

It seemed like the perfect happy ending... Until they realised that the puppies' father, Bagel, was still at the shelter.

A new chance

Bagel and Pita had arrived at the shelter together, and everyone thought he was probably the father of her babies.

The dog's foster family decided to reunite the two parents with their puppies. Very quickly, Bagel joined the household.

Both dogs were frightened of strangers and took time to adjust to their new life. They had been through a lot together.

Slowly, they began to realise they were finally safe and gradually opened up to others.

Pita and Bagel have been adopted and have gone to their wonderful forever homes. Soon it will be their puppies' turn!

Pita is adopted!
