On 3rd May, a hiker was making his way along a narrow, slippery trail on Lookout Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona.

The hiker was off the beaten track when he spotted a light reflecting off something amongst the rocks.

Bright eyes

He was shocked to realise it was a pair of very bright eyes. They belonged to a terrified dog, huddled in a small hole on the mountainside.

It was actually an emaciated female dog who blended in completely with the rocks, as her fur was exactly the same colour as the stone.

If she hadn't had such piercing eyes, the hiker might not have noticed her. He decided to call her Bright Eyes for this reason.

He calls for help

The hiker had no idea how the dog had managed to reach this spot, but it was clear she'd been stuck there for some time and might not survive much longer.

He quickly contacted the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) rescue centre for help. He waited for two hours beside the dog until the emergency team arrived on the scene.

Two emergency animal medical rescuers, Tracey Miller and Ruthie Jesus, arrived at the location.

The dog was very frightened and didn't want to move from under the rocks, but she accepted being stroked.

They carry the pooch

After a medical assessment of the dog, the rescuers determined that Bright Eyes was dangerously dehydrated. She also had cuts on her paws and an injury to her back leg.

The poor dog was too weak to make it down the mountain with her rescuers, so they took turns carrying her until they reached the ambulance.

Bright Eyes remained calm the whole time, so grateful to finally be safe.

The brave girl really relaxed and seemed to enjoy being carried down the mountain.

Bright Eyes is now resting at the rescue centre and building up her strength whilst waiting for her forever home.
