Pregnant dog's X-ray reveals a discovery vets weren't expecting at all

Winnie the Pooch weighed only 22 pounds when she arrived at the rescue centre. However, her X-rays revealed a huge surprise that required an emergency procedure.

Winnie is an adorable one-year-old Beagle. She was transferred to the Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville, USA, and the mum-to-be immediately worried the staff. Despite being far along in her pregnancy, she was underweight, tipping the scales at just 22 pounds. Yet, her belly was huge.

When the medical team performed a routine X-ray, they were left speechless. Winnie was carrying three puppies, but they were disproportionately large for their mother's small frame. The vets suspected the father was a much larger breed. This size difference made a natural birth extremely risky for the young dog.

An emergency C-section

Dr Bewley, the vet in charge of Winnie, decided to foster her so she could closely monitor the final stages of the pregnancy. She knew that every minute would count when the time came. When Winnie finally went into labour, the vet carefully watched her progress for several hours.

With no progress and the mother in danger, the decision was made to operate. Dr Bewley rushed her team to the veterinary centre for a C-section. Twenty minutes later, a miracle happened. Three beautiful, perfectly healthy puppies were born, much to the relief of the staff.

A Disney-inspired family

In a nod to their mum's name, the three newborns were named Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet. The whole little family is now resting peacefully at Dr Bewley's home. Winnie is proving to be an exemplary mother, very gentle and affectionate, as she gradually regains her strength and weight.

The rescue centre hopes this story will encourage the public to support local organisations, either through donations or by becoming foster carers. For dogs like Winnie and her babies, this support makes all the difference. Once they are old enough, the three little heroes and their brave mum will be put up for adoption to start their new lives.
