Dog vanishes into underground cave: after 48 hours of suspense, a miracle happens

By Elise Petter•

While out on a walk with his dog Naya in the Jura region of France, an owner endured two anxious days when the animal slipped into an underground cave system.

On that Sunday, Gilles Bataillard was enjoying a lovely day in Ivory, in the Jura region of France, alongside Naya, his faithful 9-year-old Jagdterrier. Just fifteen minutes after being let off her lead to play, the little dog wandered off and suddenly disappeared from her owner's sight.

Although Naya was wearing a GPS collar, the signal was not strong enough to pin down her exact location. Gilles quickly realised that something was wrong. He began frantically searching the surrounding area for the slightest clue.

Two days of suspense in the depths

In reality, the dog had chased after an animal and rushed straight into a hidden natural cavity. Trapped at the bottom of a narrow underground tunnel, Naya was completely unable to climb back up on her own.

For 48 hours, anxiety mounted for her owner. Given the complex rock formations and the vast underground network, freeing the dog without specialist help was practically impossible.

A remarkable rescue beneath the rocks

To attempt the impossible, the French Cave Rescue Organisation was called to the scene. The passionate volunteers, well used to delicate operations, carefully ventured into the tunnels to locate the adventurous little pooch.

Thanks to their expertise and determination, rescuers managed to reach the dog and bring her back to the surface, safe and sound. As reported by Le Progrès, the poignant reunion between Naya and her owner Gilles brought a wonderful end to two long days of waiting.
