A dog mum described the tearjerking moment when she had to say a final goodbye to her senior pooch. She called it "the worst pain I've ever felt."

Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking, especially when they've been part of the family for years. It can take months (or even years) to come to terms with the loss. And even then, these extraordinary creatures will always be in our hearts.

It's been over a year since actress and professional dancer Stefanie Salyers said a final goodbye to her 18-year-old Shih-Tzu Princess. And yet, the pain is still there.

Stefanie was seven years old when her parents came home with the one thing she wanted more than anything in the world: a puppy. Princess and Stefanie didn't become best friends; they became soulmates.

After Princess became ill, Stefanie took a leave of absence from a part in a Broadway show to be by her soulmate's side. And sadly, it soon became clear that this little Princess was much sicker than first thought.

Princess wasn't going to get any better, and she was in constant pain. So Stefanie and the family had to make the decision that every dog owner dreads: it was time for Princess to sleep for the last time.

Stefanie was with Princess during her final moments, and a recent video she posted on TikTok shows what it means to lose a dog. The short video shows Stefanie giving Princess her last hug. Stefanie bursts into tears when she realises she must let Princess go.

Every day with our dogs is a gift

It's a heartwrenching moment that forces us to think about the day we might have to make a similar decision. But it's also bittersweet. Because it's another example of the incredible bond we have with the furriest members of our family.

They are so special and so loving. We should be grateful for every single day we get to spend with them.
