It was the end of May in Louisville, when a report reached local animal protection services.
A dog had apparently been hiding in a bush for several days and nobody could work out why he wasn't moving around. When the officer arrived at the scene, it immediately became clear. Heartbreakingly, the dog was tied to a tree - unable to escape or move himself in any way.
Beside him lay an empty bowl, which had been left behind by his former family.
Some local residents reported that the dog had shown signs of aggression whenever anybody tried to approach him, but for the rescue officer, it was a completely different story. The dog was absolutely terrified, but allowed the man to approach and cut him free.
A dog left to fend for himself for days
The dog was immediately taken in by Metro Animal Services. Renamed Dubya, he arrived at the shelter in surprisingly good shape. Despite the days spent outdoors, he had only suffered a few insect bites, and was otherwise fairly healthy.
He soon revealed the affectionate, lively and sociable side of his personality, quickly becoming a favourite with the rescue team.
Estimated to be around three years old, Dubya is now a cheerful, playful and energetic boy, who loves running, playing ball and going on long walks. He also seems to get on well with other dogs.
Waiting for a new life
Sadly for Dubya, nobody came forward to claim him, and he was neither microchipped or neutered. Dog lovers in the community were surprised that it had taken so long for someone to report the situation, with the authorities reminding people that any dog left alone should be reported as quickly as possible.
Dubya is currently receiving plenty of love and care at the shelter. He is being treated for a condition called entropion, which could explain abnormal discharge around his eyes.
Once his treatment plan is complete, the staff will begin the process of finding him the perfect home.
