Found wandering in Burlington, Ruby struggled to settle at the shelter, so staff arranged a short-term foster stay that would change everything.

After being taken in by Burlington Animal Services, she took a little time to settle into life at the shelter.

To help ease her stress, a staff member named Haleigh took Ruby home for a short-term “sleepover.”

Love at first sight

Many shelters run dog outings and foster programmes designed to give animals a break from kennel life. Even a single night away can significantly lower a dog’s stress levels.

But for Haleigh, that one night with Ruby was enough to know she couldn’t send her back. She decided to adopt her permanently.

A surprise return to the shelter

To finalise the adoption, Haleigh had to bring Ruby back to the shelter for paperwork, a medical check, and microchipping. Ruby, unaware of the good news, appeared heartbroken in the car with ears pinned back and her eyes full of worry. Fortunately, this sweet dog had nothing to worry about.

A video shared on 2 May captured the emotional moment. It touched over 2.3 million viewers, one of whom commented: “Her little eyes are so sad. I’m glad she found her home with you.”

We’re glad too. Welcome home, Ruby.
