For many years, Dory’s life had been terrible. Her Florida owners had her live outside and restricted her to the 4-foot radius of her heavy chain. She was used for breeding multiple times, and many of her puppies died before her eyes. Dory’s future was unimaginable until a couple of kindhearted humans went in to help her.
A second chance at life
First, an animal control officer was able to convince Dory’s owners to relinquish her to Clewiston Animal Control. She was finally free from her horrible living conditions, but she was still far from safe.
The Clewiston shelter was actually already at full capacity with other homeless pets, and Pitbull-type dogs like Dory are at high risk for euthanasia. Thankfully, an active foster parent in the area heard about Dory’s story, and decided to take her in.
The very last litter
After just a few weeks of love, care and attention from her foster mum, Dory was finally ready to give birth for the last time. She brought 8 lovely puppies into the world on June 24th: 5 boys and 3 girls. Each pup was given a name relating to the Finding Nero/Finding Dory universe!
After giving birth to her very last litter, Dory was neutered - never to be forced to be a mum again!
Adopt don’t shop
Sadly, Dory’s story isn't really a special case - it happens quite a lot. Shelters all over the country are filled with former breeding dogs, and many of them are Pit Bulls.
We could help stop backyard breeders by not purchasing their puppies, and opting to rescue and adopt instead. If you are thinking of adopting, please consider a senior dog or a mother like Dory. The amazing love and devotion you’ll get in return will all be worth it. And being a foster pawrent is another selfless and deeply rewarding way to save dogs' lives.
