It was an exceptionally cold day when Leslie Ysuhuaylas was making one of her routine checks of an area in Texas that had become a popular spot for dumping unwanted pets.
It was there that she made one of the most heartwrenching discoveries. A dog curled up in a small box of towels that Leslie had previously left there. Leslie could tell that the dog was in a very bad way, in fact, it looked like he was close to death. The pup, a Shar-Pei mix, was barely moving and had a swollen head and a deep cut on one of his legs.
Worried friend
But while the dog was in a desperate state, he wasn’t alone. Leslie noticed a young chocolate Labrador nearby who was watching her attend to the dog in the box.
With help from members of The Underdog Project, Leslie managed to put a lead on the dog and rush him to the emergency vet, one of the rescuers went back to see if the other dog was still there.
Fortunately, she was.
Happy ending
The emotional moment Benny was rescued was captured on video:
The canine pals, now called Benny and Betty, were reunited again, and Leslie was able to get them both a place at Rescue Dogs Rock in New York, where they will go once they are well enough to travel and be put up for adoption.
