A group of hikers were walking in the Polish Beskids when they suddenly spotted what looked like a German Shepherd dog in the distance.
They realised that the dog was holding a puppy in her mouth. But sadly, the dog took fright, dropped the pup, and ran away.
Tourists shocked by puppy’s real identity
The tourists waited to see if the mum would return. Sadly, there was no sign of her anywhere, and the puppy seemed to be in distress. The tourists just couldn’t leave him to fend for himself, so they decided to pick him up, walk him back to the parking lot, and drive him to the vet’s.
It was there that they made an unbelievable discovery: The puppy wasn’t a puppy at all! It was a wolf cub!
How to handle orphaned wildlife
The vets quickly transferred the animal to the specialists at the “Stowarzyszenie dla Natury "Wilk"" wildlife centre. There, the wolf cub will be properly cared for until he can be returned to the wild.
The specialists at the wildlife centre explained to the tourists that once a baby animal was handled by humans, it was difficult for them to be re-introduced to the wild because their mums might reject them. It’s usually better to leave orphaned babies alone and contact the experts right away. Despite this, staff at the centre will do everything they can to successfully reunite the wolf cub with his mother.
