Pete Miller was driving along the A18 in Lincolnshire, when he spotted a huddled black shape lying in a ditch. He immediately called Immingham Dogs Home for help.

"This morning Kelly at Immingham Dogs Home received a phone call just before 7 from a lorry driver that had seen a dog in a ditch", shared the owner of Paw & Co. freedom field on Facebook. "Thinking this was possibly Enzo who we are searching for (although a long way off) I headed out, and I found this very sweet female cocker just laid in the ditch".

"The little dog was wet-through lying on the ground, petrified and watching all the traffic fly by", explained Pete, who initially raised the alarm.

Petrified and alone

The petrified Cocker Spaniel had no microchip, and she was extremely matted and stained with urine.

Immingham Dogs Home liaised with rescue volunteer Erica Fox, who immediately agreed to take the little dog into her care.

"We think she's come from a back-yard breeder or puppy farm and just used for breeding," Erica told the BBC.

New beginnings

Pete decided to name the dog Sally after his first dog. He recently returned to the rescue centre to see how she was doing and was thrilled to hear her story had gone viral.

With 1.5 million views on TikTok, Sally has now had around 1,000 applications to adopt her. While the rescue is pleased there's been so much interest in her story, they don't feel the spaniel is ready for her new home just yet.

Physically, Sally may be doing much better, but she will need time and patience to recover from her ordeal.
