Irish animal charity the ISPCA has begun a bid to find the perpetrator of what the charity has labelled a “heartless act”.
A local Donegal vet was alerted to the find by a member of the public. On initial inspection, the bag was believed to contain kittens.
Rescue bid
Vet Alexander Smyth, who took the call, attended the scene and revealed that the bag contained three collie pups. Because the bag was precariously hanging above a stream, Dr Smyth trod carefully; his wrong move may have caused the bag to drop into the water.
In a statement, ISPCA Senior Inspector Kevin McGinley said, “It is disturbing how anyone could be so cruel and heartless, to put three vulnerable little puppies in a plastic bag, leaving them to dangle over a river to an inevitable death.”
Road to recovery
Dr Smyth estimated the dogs to be around 10 days old at the time of his rescue. They have since been taken into care and have been treated for hypothermia and starvation.
Although they remain in intensive care, the puppies are making a steady recovery. The ISPCA hopes that in time, they will find their forever homes.
