A couple of years ago, rescuers from Kingsville Animal Rescue Service in Texas, USA, received a call about a dog lying by the side of a highway.
A heartbreaking discovery
But after arriving on the scene, they found a second dog standing guard over the body. Rescuers believe it was a sibling of the dog who had probably been killed by a passing vehicle.
One witness described the scene as "heartbreaking."
"This boy wasn't going to let anyone mess with his sister," said the official. "[We] had a hard time convincing him that we were there to help him."
But after gaining the dog's trust, rescuers transported him to the shelter.
Staff at the rescue centre decided to call the loyal dog 'Guardian.' And according to the latest update, Guardian is slowly coming to terms with his loss.
"He is still a little confused about what happened, but at least he is now in a safe place with fresh, cool water and belly full of food," read a Facebook post from Kingsville Rescue Service.
Guardian is on the road to recovery
Guardian will stay where he is for the next few weeks. He'll then go up for adoption.
And whoever gets to take this pooch home will be one very lucky person. After all, Guardian has shown that he's one of the most loyal dogs in the world.
