In a moment of boredom, this dog picked a dangerous object to chew on.

Ah, dogs and their love of chewing. As every dog owner knows, you sometimes have to let go of your materialistic side. Some of our belongings are bound to fall victim to the teeth of our faithful companions.

And while we usually accept this as part of the deal, there are times when the destruction can be particularly irritating. However, this story should help put things into perspective.

In May 2024, a dog decided to entertain himself while his owners were asleep. He found an object that seemed perfect for chewing. Unfortunately, he made a very poor choice and would soon face the consequences.

A dangerous choice

A video released this summer by CBS News, provided by the fire department in Tulsa, Oklahoma (USA), serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of certain objects that should never be left within reach of our canine friends.

In his quest for destruction, the poor dog chose a lithium phone battery. After just a few bites, it punctured and exploded right before the surprised culprit's eyes.

A lucky escape

The battery, which had been left on the dog's bed, quickly started a fire that had all the potential to spread throughout the living room. Fortunately, the two dogs and the cat in the room had the right instinct. They escaped quickly through a large pet flap, also suitable for dogs, which likely saved their lives.

Firefighters arrived promptly to extinguish the blaze, and the pet owners were evacuated safely.

It was a close call for the family, but thankfully no one was hurt. The Tulsa Fire Department hopes that by sharing this footage, they can remind everyone that batteries must be stored according to basic safety recommendations. Most importantly, they should be kept well out of reach of pets and children.
