A facility in Wisconsin, USA, was breeding Beagle dogs for research.

The reason Beagles are often used in testing is their docile nature. Testers believe they more readily “accept” being handled and living behind the bars of their kennels.

Beagles are known for being docile, calm, and trusting dogs.

A confidential agreement

Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy negotiated a confidential agreement to purchase 1,500 Beagle puppies from the facility to save them.

The facility reportedly agreed to sell the puppies to avoid prosecution for mistreatment relating to the puppies' eyes. Indeed, the procedures carried out at the facility did not comply with veterinary guidelines.

Activist protests

In April, there were several protests outside the facility, and numerous activists entered the premises to rescue 30 puppies. The activists were pepper-sprayed by police, and several of them faced legal action. Members of Big Dog Ranch Rescue stated that they have no connection to the protestors who seized the 30 puppies.

So far, the rescue centre has received 700 adoption applications for the puppies. The rescuers have indicated that the pups may need some time to adjust to their new environment. Fortunately, they are in good health and happy to be freed from the hell they were forced to live in. A much brighter future now awaits them.
