In Savigny-le-Temple, a quiet town in France, the peace of a local neighbourhood was regularly disrupted by unusual noises and smells. Concerned and puzzled by the situation, neighbours eventually contacted the authorities. On a Friday afternoon, local police went to the scene to carry out a routine check on the seemingly ordinary flat.
But when the door opened, as reported by French newspaper Ouest-France, the officers could not believe their eyes. Waiting inside was a massive four-legged family: no fewer than 23 Chihuahuas and a cat were living there. Some of the tiny dogs, suffering from a severe lack of space, were kept in cages without any food or water. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the police immediately called in the animal protection brigade.
An overwhelmed owner
Speaking to the resident, officers quickly realised that this was not a case of deliberate cruelty, but rather a sad spiral of events. Lacking the financial means to neuter his pets, the man had become completely overwhelmed by successive litters. To prevent further breeding while he was out, he isolated the dogs as best he could.
Despite trying to find new homes for them on his own, the situation got completely out of hand. Fully aware that he could no longer care for them properly, the owner sadly agreed to sign over his beloved pets. Social and psychological support has also been offered to help him get through this difficult time.
A fresh start for the rescued pets
Thanks to the swift response of the 30 Millions d'Amis Foundation and a local charity, all these little animals were taken into care under the best possible conditions. With veterinary check-ups, tailored treatment, and endless cuddles, the small pack is finally starting to recover.
Although only four of the dogs and the cat were microchipped when they were found, every single one of them is now receiving loving care. They are peacefully waiting to be put up for adoption, ready to start the warm new chapter they so richly deserve.
