A member of the rescue Caitlin from Sky Sanctuary was there for an emergency when Britney was abandoned.
Sadly, this person's rescue was already full and no one could take the dog in.
A partner rescue
There was very little hope for Britney. So the rescuer called Koko Garcia for help. Koko is the president of the animal protection charity Handover Rover, based in Phoenix, Arizona, and a partner of the Caitlin from Sky Sanctuary rescue. Fortunately, Koko agreed to save her, even though the dog's health had been serious for six months and her future was uncertain.
By a huge coincidence, Koko was already caring for another paralysed dog at the time, so she knew exactly what to expect. She took Britney to a neurologist who told her that the neuroreceptors in her back weren't working. However, her nerves could still feel touch, which meant she could potentially learn to walk in some way.
A physiotherapy treatment
A physiotherapist also recommended an intensive six-month treatment. Sadly, the physio sessions didn't show much improvement. Koko eventually accepted that Britney would remain in a wheelchair for life. But that's when a miracle happened!
About a month after slowing down the pace and reducing her treatment, Britney started taking real steps! Currently, the brave dog is walking again, though patience is still needed. Once her gait is more confident, the dog will be ready for adoption. We wish her all the best for the future.
