In the town of Lesparre-Médoc (Gironde), municipal police officers were carrying out a routine patrol when they spotted, amongst a pile of rubbish, the motionless silhouette of a dog.
Tied up, with no shelter, simply left there with a bowl of kibble, he was exposed to the cold, rain and dangers of the road. No owner was present and the animal had neither a microchip nor any identification.
An unacceptable act
Faced with this discovery, the town hall reacted immediately. On its Facebook page, it condemned an act deemed "unacceptable" and "profoundly inhumane". According to the municipality, the dog could have "died alone, in total indifference", had the officers not intervened in time.
The town also reminded people that abandoning an animal is a criminal offence, just like illegal fly-tipping. "Our town is not a dumping ground, and our animals are not objects to be thrown away," the municipal team reminded.
An appeal for witnesses
To find the person responsible, an appeal for witnesses was launched on 6th November. It spread quickly, with nearly 750 shares in just a few days. The town hall confirmed that legal proceedings will be initiated as soon as the owner has been identified.
In the meantime, the dog has been taken to safety. His future now depends on the outcome of the investigation.
