Paula McIvor, 43, from Glenavy, was handed a 10-month suspended prison sentence at Lisburn Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to six animal welfare charges.
Inspectors found appalling conditions at Waggies Pet Hotel, including strong urine smells, faeces on the floor, rubbish piled up, and dogs left without light, water or proper separation.
Court hears of distressing conditions
Many animals were underweight or matted, and one border collie, Tonks, later had to be put to sleep due to renal failure caused by neglect.
Judge condemns ‘breach of trust’
District Judge Rosie Watters told McIvor she had turned her business into “a licence to print money” and betrayed the trust of owners who believed their pets were safe.
McIvor was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to Tonks’ owner and £500 each to the owners of two other dogs, Sam and Steve. The court also issued a deprivation order, allowing authorities to seize and rehome her remaining dog.
