After buying a fixer-upper in Southern California, a family decided to install security cameras. Their goal was simple: to keep an eye on the building site while they were away. Soon, their phones started buzzing with notifications. They kept getting motion alerts, but every time they checked the footage, the rooms appeared to be empty.
The mystery was finally solved one night at around 3 a.m. The image on the screen became clear. It wasn't burglars, but two tiny, moving silhouettes. Two small dogs had taken shelter inside the derelict building. The puppies had made a cosy nest for themselves in the fibreglass insulation that had fallen on the floor, the only soft spot to rest amidst the concrete.
A challenging rescue
At dawn, the new owners rushed to the house. They found the two little animals asleep, snuggled up together amongst the rubble. Unfortunately, as the humans approached, the puppies panicked and ran to hide in the debris. Feeling overwhelmed, the family contacted Suzette Hall, founder of the Logan’s Legacy 29 rescue organisation.
When she arrived, the rescuer noted the animals' incredible survival instinct. They were so hungry they had even started chewing on cardboard boxes to try and find food. The capture proved to be tricky. One of the puppies, a little white female, had got herself stuck under an air conditioning unit. Suzette Hall had to use all her strength to move the appliance and manage to slip a lead around the puppy's neck.
An emotional reunion
While the first puppy was quickly brought to safety, the second was nowhere to be found in the maze-like house. Suzette decided to set up a trap cage with some tempting food inside. The next morning, to everyone's relief, the second puppy was waiting patiently inside the trap.
He was immediately taken to the veterinary clinic to be reunited with his sibling. The reunion was incredibly moving. "They were so happy to see each other again. It was a real little party," Suzette Hall shared on social media. Now named Candi and Cashew, the two survivors are slowly recovering from their ordeal. They will never again have to endure the cold of a building site and are now waiting to join a real forever family.
