In August 2025, Emily Bishop Green adopted a black puppy from her local rescue centre and named him Rudy.

Little Rudy and his five siblings had been found abandoned in West Virginia before being taken to the rescue centre.

The rescuers had no idea about the puppies' origins.

A test to find out

Emily was immediately drawn to Rudy. She was convinced he was a black Labrador puppy. The pup also had strange white markings on his chest, so she wondered if he might have some Spaniel or Beagle in his DNA too.

To get to the bottom of it, Emily did a DNA test on Rudy to find out his genetic heritage. The DNA results arrived a few days later and Emily was shocked when she read them. She could never have predicted what she discovered!

In shock

Rudy was only 2% Labrador. In reality, the pup was 31% Pitbull, 26% Rottweiler, 15% American Staffordshire Terrier and 18% Plott Hound.

When they discovered the results, internet users were all very kind and reacted with humour: "That seems like a good DNA mix to me." "She looks exactly like mine when she was a puppy, and she's 47% Labrador." Or even: "No, he's 2% Labrador and 98% deceptive Labrador."
