Experts believe dogs are able to pick up on subtle physical and emotional signals, many of which humans are unaware they are giving.
Dogs have around 300 million scent receptors compared with a human’s six million, meaning their sense of smell is vastly superior. This allows them to detect tiny chemical changes in the body, such as fluctuations in hormones linked to emotion.
Dogs' smell the 'love hormone'
A recent TikTok clip brought the idea to wider attention, suggesting dogs may “smell” oxytocin, often called the “love hormone”, when it rises in their owner’s brain. The short video showed a puppy nestled into its human’s arms, with text claiming dogs share in the joy of those hormonal surges.
Reactions online were filled with emotion. One user wrote: “Love is literally in the air.” Another added: “So she knows how much I love her? Oh good.”
Others said the thought brought comfort after losing a pet, while some suggested dogs were simply reading body language, tone and behaviour.
Attuned to owners' emotions
Regardless of the exact science, experts agree that dogs are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions. While owning a dog demands dedication, exercise and proper care, many find the unconditional bond – and the possibility that their pets really do sense love – makes it more than worthwhile.
