Civil guards in Zaragoza were called in to help a dog who had fallen into an irrigation pond. With no way of getting out, she was minutes away from drowning.

Irrigation ponds pose a huge risk to free-roaming animals, who often approach them when searching for water.

But with steep sides and a slippery surface, it can be impossible for trapped animals to get back out.

The dog kept going under

When the team arrived, they found two Pointers had fallen into the water.

Heartbreakingly, one of the dogs had already passed away. The other was fighting for her life.

Panicked and exhausted, she couldn't keep her head above water. And with a 5 metre drop, it seemed like an impossible mission to pull her out.

A quick-thinking officer jumped in to the water, supporting the dog's weight while his colleagues worked out a plan of action.

Minutes to spare

With not a minute to spare, the team managed to pull the dog onto shore.

The poor pup had been in the water so long, she was suffering from hypothermia. It turned out the Pointer didn't have a microchip either, suggesting she may have been abandoned.

Her rescuer Sergio offered to care for her at home until the right family came forward to adopt her.

Thankfully, what could have been a tragic incident had a very happy ending!
