Dorset and Somerset: Police dogs help with 2024 Olympic preparations in Paris

Police dogs from Dorset and Somerset have been lending a paw in Paris as the city prepares for the 2024 Olympics. 

Dogs and their handlers from Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, and Avon and Somerset have been working in the French capital to bolster security ahead of the Games, which begin on Friday, July 26.

The team included Dorset Police Dog (PD) Jeff and his handler PC Hillier, PD Roo from Devon with handler Sgt. Phil Wilson, PD EmmyLou with handler PC Rich Martin and PD

Hope with handler Sgt. Ben Smith from Avon and Somerset. They joined French forces in a comprehensive security effort, inspecting the Olympic Village and various event sites to ensure safety.

The dogs have formed strong bonds with the French police and have become crucial team members. Though the days were long, the pups relished the opportunity to test their impressive sniffing abilities.

Essential work

Once they finished their official duties, the dogs were honoured with a visit to the British Embassy, where the staff and Ambassador thanked the handlers and their canine partners for their hard work.

Dorset Police Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan expressed pride in the deployment, stating, “We were pleased to support the security operation and contribute to a safe and successful Olympic event.”
