A Pittie-mix who spent over half a decade in a shelter won't be alone this Xmas. Instead, he'll be enjoying festive treats at his forever home, with his forever dog-mum.

It's been a long stretch for  Alejandro. And we mean a really long stretch! The adorable Pittie crossbreed arrived at the SOS Perrera Los Barrios rescue shelter in Cadiz, Spain, all the way back in 2016. And, until very recently, that's where he stayed.

That means Alejandro has spent the last six years living in a shelter. The shelter staff couldn't understand why nobody wanted this sweet boy. And they were constantly amazed by Alejandro's happy-go-lucky spirit and loving nature.

A wish comes true

Despite years of being ignored and rejected, nothing could get Alejandro down. It was like he knew his perfect pooch parent would walk through the gate eventually. All he had to do was wait. And Alejandro was right.

Her name is Celia Rodriguez. Celia fell in love with Alejandro at first sight. And when she heard his story, Celia knew this would be her dog.

After completing all the checks and screening requirements (the SOS only gives dogs to people who deserve them), Celia arrived to take Alejandro home. One of the SOS volunteers filmed Alejandro's freedom day and shared the heartwarming moment on Facebook.

The cute clip shows Celia taking Alejandro through the front gate on a lead. Alejandro's tail wags as he enjoys his first sniff of real freedom. He then stops and looks up at his new mum, like he's asking, "Is this real?"

The smell of freedom

It's very real! Celia gives Alejandro a big cuddle, and the pair wave to the camera before walking off into their happily ever after.

"We have no words to express the happiness of seeing Alejandro walk out the door to freedom with his new family," posted the shelter. "He's been with us since 2016. We'll miss him so much, but, at last, Alejandro is where he needs to be. We're delighted for him."
