Dog owners are urged to take extra care after a potentially harmful substance washed up on several Kent beaches, raising concerns for pets and wildlife.

Teams from HM Coastguard were called to investigate reports of a white, barrel-shaped material found on the shoreline at Ramsgate Main Sands over the weekend.

The substance, believed to be palm oil, was also later identified at Margate Main Sands and Botany Bay.

Waxy deposits spotted along the coast

Palm oil can appear harmless, but it is known to be dangerous if ingested by dogs, potentially causing serious illness. Authorities have stressed that pets should be kept well away from the deposits.

Thanet District Council confirmed it is working with coastal teams to manage the situation and remove the material as quickly as possible.

Advice issued to dog owners

Warning signs are being installed at the affected beaches, and inspections are taking place along the coastline.

Dog walkers are advised to keep pets on leads in the impacted areas and to prevent them from sniffing or eating anything unusual on the sand. Members of the public who spot further deposits are encouraged to report them so they can be safely dealt with.
