Irises' story begins with a brutal betrayal. The 8-year-old Shepherd cross was dumped in the middle of the desert with nothing but her plastic, igloo-shaped kennel. Loyal to the end, the dog didn't leave the spot, hoping against all odds that her owners' car would reappear.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan driving by noticed the strange sight in the middle of nowhere. As he got closer, he discovered two gentle, sad eyes watching him. Despite her ordeal, Irises immediately trusted her rescuer and climbed into his vehicle with a glimmer of hope.
A second chance for a senior dog
She was first taken to a local shelter, but her chances of being adopted seemed slim due to her age. That's when Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, a charity in San Francisco, USA, that specialises in older dogs, decided to take her under their wing. For them, there was nothing to “fix” about Irises; she just needed a place to belong.
In her foster home, the dog with the beautiful coat turned out to be an exceptionally gentle companion. ”Calm and serene, she moves through the world like a quiet little blessing, happy just to curl up next to her humans,” the rescue described on its website. Her gentle soul and loving gaze soon caught someone's attention.
A fateful meeting
The miracle happened when a man looking for a large, gentle companion came across Irises. It was love at first sight. He knew instantly that this dog, who had survived the loneliness of the desert, was the treasure he had been searching for.
A few weeks after her adoption, the news was wonderful. Her new owner wrote to the rescue, saying: ”She is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me.” Now, Irises no longer spends her days scanning the horizon in the desert heat. Instead, she enjoys long cuddles on a cosy sofa, loved for who she is: a brave dog who has finally found her forever family.
