Yesenia, who dedicates her days to feeding and sheltering stray dogs in Patillas, Puerto Rico, was devastated when Chantal, a dog who was always punctual for meals and affectionate with volunteers, suddenly disappeared. As the days passed, her worry grew, wondering what on earth could have happened to the animal.
The answer came a few days later. Chantal returned trembling and covered in paint. Her white and brown coat had been deliberately covered in bright colours, and an examination of her eyes showed that the dog had in no way consented to this act.
A dog in need of help
An art professor's expertise confirmed that the paint wasn't meant for fur. Whilst the exact substance remains unknown, it was sticky and had hardened Chantal's coat. The dog developed an allergic skin rash that was red, flaky and extremely irritating. After an initial bath, volunteers clipped her fur to remove as much paint as possible, whilst administering antibiotics and antihistamines to prevent infection and ease the itching. Moisturising creams were applied to relieve her discomfort.
Rather than sending her back to the streets, a volunteer took Chantal into his home, offering her a safe and loving environment. Little by little, she regained her cheerful and affectionate temperament, rebuilding her confidence by playing with other dogs.
Recently, a family from Pennsylvania adopted her from afar. This family is also adopting a second dog from Puerto Rico, guaranteeing Chantal a companion and the chance to leave behind this colourful but painful past.
