This summer, the Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform (Dallas DogRRR), based in Texas, United States, was alerted about a puppy found alone on a flooded baseball field in the south of the state. Without delay, a team was sent to the scene to help him.
In pouring rain, the volunteers initially struggled to locate the animal. After a lengthy search, one of them finally spotted him, curled up on an old onion sack. The puppy was motionless, soaked and paralysed with fear. He seemed convinced that someone was going to come back for him.
Slugger, a fighter with a big heart
Brought back to the rescue, the puppy was in a worrying state. He was starving, weak and infested with hundreds of ticks. Yet despite the fear and pain, he quickly proved to be disarmingly gentle. According to Patti Dawson, director of the organisation, his temperament showed that he'd already been in contact with humans.
Quickly taken into care, the puppy received the treatment he needed. Against all odds, he showed an impressive ability to recover from his ordeal. It was for this reason that the volunteers named him Slugger, in tribute to his fighting spirit.
Over the weeks, Slugger regained his vitality and revealed his playful character. In his foster home, he even developed a habit all of his own: piling his toys on his bed, like a little treasure.
An adoption full of happiness
Slugger's transformation moved everyone who'd followed him since his rescue. Very quickly, a couple fell for his charms and decided to offer him a forever home.
Today, the puppy enjoys the love and attention of his new family every day. They make sure to meet all his needs... and to give him as many toys as he wants. Slugger will never have to fear abandonment again.
