Abandoned by the family he'd always lived with, this senior dog was traumatised when he arrived at the shelter.

A particularly heartbreaking abandonment. Swade, an adorable Chihuahua cross, arrived at Wags & Walks Rescue shelter in Los Angeles, USA, with his family, and it wasn't a courtesy visit.

The poor elderly pooch was left at the shelter by his family, despite having lived with them all his life. This major upheaval traumatised him, and the shelter team wanted to share the first images of his arrival to raise awareness about the consequences of abandonment.

Huddled in his cage

Once at the shelter, the poor dog was placed in a cage and was struggling with confusion and missing his family. After so many years with them, how could they let him down like this?

Desperate, the poor little dog huddled in his cage, frightened by this new environment that seemed hostile to him.

@wagsandwalksla Meet Swade, our new senior sweetheart who was unfortunately surrendered to the shelter after his family, who has had him since he was just 6 months old, moved and left him behind. He had been in the same home for the majority of his life and now he's starting over, searching for love, snuggles, and a place to call home for his golden years. Senior dogs like Swade deserve all the cozy beds, belly rubs, and most importantly, unconditional love. A gradual recovery

Fortunately, thanks to the kindness of the carers, little Swade gradually learned to relax. While this radical life change is even more difficult for an elderly dog, he managed to overcome his fears and slowly got used to life at the shelter.
