The discovery was made early on 6th March in Bonner Springs, Kansas, in the USA. Officers from Bonner Springs Animal Control were called out after a dog was reported as being left outside a vet's practice.
When they arrived, they found a male Pit Bull cross puppy locked inside a plastic storage box. The box had no air holes, and he had been left out in a raging storm.
A handwritten note
On the side of the container, someone had scrawled some information about the animal. The message said the puppy's name was Kenji and gave a date of birth: 13th November 2025.
The person who abandoned the dog had also added a note saying that Kenji "has a big appetite when he's not sick".
When the officers opened the box, they were met with a disturbing sight. The puppy was wearing a makeshift cone around his neck and was showing signs of a possible rectal prolapse, a veterinary emergency.
A long road to recovery
The dog was immediately rushed to a vet for treatment. He later underwent surgery with the help of the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.
Although the surgery was successful, vets have warned that he has a long road to recovery.
The police shared the case on social media to gather information. Abandoning an animal is illegal in the state of Kansas and can be considered a form of animal cruelty.
Thanks to tips from the public, investigators eventually identified a suspect. According to the authorities, this person has been charged with animal abandonment. During the operation, police also rescued two other puppies, who are now in the care of animal services and undergoing veterinary examinations.
Despite his rough start in life, it looks like Kenji will soon be able to start a new chapter. Officials have announced that he and the other puppies will soon be available for adoption through the Great Plains SPCA.
