It was a female dog, desperately searching for a safe place to shelter.
She chose an unlikely hiding spot: the inside of a fallen tree in the woods behind the couple's motorhome.
Welcoming her puppies
As it turned out, she had chosen this makeshift shelter for a very specific reason: to give birth to her puppies. The hollow tree trunk had become a cosy little den! Sadly, the weather was far from kind to the brave mother and her litter, as they had to endure sweltering heat and violent storms.
Fortunately, despite the terrible conditions, the puppies managed to stay dry. The couple provided food and water for the mother, whom they named Georgia, before contacting the specialist charity Labor of Love Transport Rescue to ask for help.
A brave mother
When they arrived, the rescuers realised quickly that Georgia was a lovely dog. She was incredibly trusting of humans and walked on the lead without any fuss. Georgia watched calmly as the rescuers gently lifted her puppies out of their makeshift home, one by one.
Afterwards, the whole family was checked over by a vet. All eight puppies are in good health. However, Georgia has tested positive for heartworm, a parasitic disease that requires treatment. Fortunately, the vet is optimistic about her recovery.
Today, the little family is safe and resting at the rescue centre. Once the puppies are weaned, they will be put up for adoption, alongside their brave mum. We wish them all the very best for the future!
Safe at last
The whole family is doing well
