While driving between two towns in Brazil, Edsania Tavares noticed some movement along a forest road. Peering through the leaves, she spotted two tiny black puppies.
A surprise in the woods
As the head of the Instituto Rede do Bem Cocal do Sul, a shelter for abandoned animals, she immediately pulled her car over. But as she approached the two babies, she got a huge surprise: seven more puppies came running out of the woods to greet her.
"I panicked because there were only two of them at first. Then, out of nowhere, the whole pack appeared," Edsania Tavares told The Dodo. "I cried so much. It was fate that brought us together."
Safe and sound at the shelter
A local resident explained that the animals had arrived there two days earlier. Unable to bear the thought of leaving them behind, Edsania loaded all nine puppies into her car.
Worried that their mother might have also been abandoned in the area, she returned to the spot later that day. However, after several hours of searching, the mother dog was nowhere to be found.
The nine puppies are now safe and sound at the shelter, settling into their new lives. They will be put up for adoption as soon as they are ready to find their forever homes.
