Terrified when she arrived at the rescue, this dog gave birth to an exceptional litter.

When Lovebug was taken in by Hope for Life Rescue in Virginia, United States, she had just given birth. Very thin and frightened, the dog refused to let anyone near her puppies, which she protected fiercely. But what surprised the rescue team most was the incredible number of puppies: there were 14.

For a medium-sized dog, such a litter is extremely rare. Generally, females give birth to between five and six puppies. Yet Lovebug cared for all fourteen of her little ones single-handedly with total devotion, never giving up.

An extraordinary mum

At first, the dog trembled every time someone approached her. It was difficult to help her as she was so wary. But the volunteers knew she wouldn't manage alone in the long run. Gradually, a volunteer called Suzie won her trust, gently. Every day, she would sit near her, read her stories, and bring her homemade chicken.

Thanks to this patience and the team's constant affection, Lovebug understood she could let her guard down. She eventually accepted human presence, whilst continuing to watch over her little ones with admirable tenderness.

A second chance

Soon, the puppies began moving about, exploring their surroundings, whilst following their mum everywhere. Full of energy, they quickly socialised, each developing their own personality. All were adopted, one by one, into loving homes.

Today, several years after their rescue, Lovebug and her 14 puppies live happily in their new families. This dog's devotion, combined with the volunteers' unwavering commitment, gave them a future full of love. We hope they continue to thrive in their forever homes!
