A dramatic near-miss in the Pyrenees has highlighted the dangers of mountain sports after a skier and her dog were swept along by an avalanche in Andorra.

Footage filmed by Spanish skier Ares Masip captures the moment the snow beneath her gives way on Pic de l'Hortell.

It sent both her and her dog tumbling down the hill.

Caught by surprise

Masip had been skiing with her dog, Cim, when the mountainside suddenly began to collapse. She said the situation changed in seconds.

Despite knowing the area well and believing it to be safe, she described how “the mountain was falling apart” beneath them.

The footage shows Masip shouting desperately for Cim as the ground starts to move, capturing the fear and confusion of the moment.

No such thing as zero risk

Although both skier and dog escaped without injury, Masip said the incident underlined an important lesson for anyone heading into the mountains. She stressed that every possible step should be taken to reduce risk, but warned that complete safety is never guaranteed.

Her experience serves as a stark reminder that in places like Andorra, even experienced skiers can face sudden and unpredictable danger.
