The car, with the dogs inside, had been parked in the car park for weeks.
Members of the public alerted the police at around 1:20 am on 18th May.
Neglect and animal cruelty
The two dog owners were arrested by the police for neglect and animal cruelty. They told officers that they had been checking on the puppies regularly to make sure they were alright.
However, police officers discovered the dogs were covered in faeces and urine. There were also parasites in the car. The 24 Chihuahuas had no food or water available. The dogs were skinny and had patches of fur missing all over their bodies.
A trip to the police station
During the arrest, one of the two suspects began hitting their head against one of the dog crates. As a result, officers took them to a psychiatric hospital for assessment, while the other suspect was taken into custody.
The 24 puppies were seized and placed in the care of the rescue shelter. They have been examined and treated for parasites. The little dogs are now resting and regaining their strength. We will be following this story.
