Emergency services were called to Connaught Water in Epping Forest on Sunday afternoon after reports that people had fallen through the ice. Footage filmed by a bystander showed the dramatic moment the pair struggled in the icy water as the surface gave way beneath them.
Both men were later checked over by ambulance crews at the scene.
Icy conditions cause lake to give way
Essex Fire and Rescue Service said the incident began when a dog ran onto the frozen lake and became stranded. One man entered the water in an attempt to reach the animal, but broke through the ice. A second passer-by then went in to help, only to find himself in difficulty as well.
Fire crews used specialist equipment to bring both men out of the water. Despite the dangerous conditions, the dog was safely recovered and reunited with its owners.
Emergency services issue safety warning
Fire officers stressed that frozen lakes and ponds can be extremely deceptive, even during prolonged cold spells. Ice thickness can vary and may not support a person’s weight.
Members of the public are urged not to enter frozen water under any circumstances. If a person or animal is in trouble on ice, the advice is to keep a safe distance and call the emergency services immediately.
