The organisation rescued an incredible 211 dogs from a home in Christian County, Missouri.
Rescuers were alerted to the situation by police.
Negotiating the handover
They had to negotiate with the owner to surrender the dogs to them. The poor pups were living in appalling conditions. Inside the house, temperatures were extremely high, and the rooms were full of excrement. There were also dangerous levels of ammonia.
The rescue operation continued on Thursday, 31 July, when more animals, including cats and birds, were found in the same property.
Appeal for donations
The dogs were taken to the animal welfare organisation's headquarters in St Louis for treatment. Many dogs were suffering from malnutrition, infections and skin problems due to neglect. All the dogs were small breeds, including Shih Tzus and Chihuahuas.
The scale of the rescue will put enormous strain on the already overcrowded shelter. The rescuers, therefore, decided to waive adoption fees for dogs over 35 pounds to help make room for the rescued dogs. They're also asking the public to help by donating towels, blankets and newspapers.
We hope these brave little dogs recover quickly from their ordeal.
