A shocking incident unfolded on one of the main streets of Kalisz, Poland, leaving onlookers horrified.

On Saturday, 11 January, witnesses reported seeing a man on a scooter dump a sack at an intersection in Poland.

Inside the sack was a three-year-old dog. The distressing act has sparked outrage among animal lovers, with many expressing disbelief and anger at the man’s cruel behaviour.

What kind of person would do this?

“Monster, not human!” This was just one of many furious comments that flooded social media after news of the incident broke. The couple who witnessed the event immediately called the city guard, who then alerted the police. The man fled on his scooter towards Rożdżały, and efforts to identify him are ongoing.

The abandoned dog was taken to the Kalisz animal shelter, where specialists began assessing its health. “It’s a huge trauma for the animal,” Jacek Kołata, manager of the Homeless Animal Shelter in Kalisz, told PAP.

“Abandoning dogs is, unfortunately, becoming more common. Although animal abuse is punishable by up to three years in prison, there’s still a lack of proper regulations to effectively prevent such acts. Work on changing the law is already underway,” Kołata added in an interview with a local news portal.

Human cruelty knows no bounds

This incident is not an isolated one in the region. Just days earlier, the Kalisz City Guard intervened in another case involving a dog tied to a railing in the Zagorzynek estate. The animal waited hours for its owner, who later admitted she had forgotten about it in a rush. The woman was fined for her negligence.

“An absolute lack of heart!” Kalisz residents shared their indignation online, and the internet erupted with a storm of comments condemning such behaviour. Everyone agreed that the mistreatment of defenceless animals cannot go unpunished.

“Punish and punish again!” urged many commenters. The case has triggered strong emotions and prompted reflection on the responsibility humans bear for their four-legged companions.

The question remains: will changes to the law help prevent such acts of cruelty? Only time will tell. However, residents are calling for justice and demanding stronger measures to protect animals from such inhumane treatment.
