The man was trekking the Santa Cruz circuit near Huaraz when he lost sight of his group on the second day of the climb.
Struggling to navigate his way through snow and dense fog at an altitude of 15,000 feet, he suddenly noticed a dog emerging from the mist.
Lassie to the rescue!
Describing the moment, he said the dog appeared out of nowhere, wagging its tail, reminiscent of a scene from the classic TV series "Lassie."
Trusting the dog’s apparent knowledge of the terrain, the hiker decided to follow it.
To his amazement, the dog led him along unseen paths, eventually guiding him to a signpost indicating the direction of the Punta Unión pass.
Canine mountain guides
Once the hiker reached the pass, the dog stayed with him until his group reunited. The loyal companion then continued to accompany the hikers for miles. Locals later explained that stray dogs in the region often follow and assist trekkers, almost like unofficial mountain guides.
The Brit captured the heartwarming experience on video, sharing his disbelief and gratitude as he spoke to his unlikely saviour: "Alright, you’re in charge now."
